You know, I had a really weird interaction with this design process and I’m just going to log it here.
I believe there was a cognitive dissonance happening with this mostly white soul cover band.
When they asked a black woman to make something that read “soul” (which is something many people from many different races can do, relying on our shared cultural reference points) they had an identity crisis
The became uncomfortable with their use and proximity to “soul”, but their distance from the culture.. this only ever registered visually for them
They ran me around in circles trying to slowly back out of their ideas
Regardless, the project didn’t pan out, but I liked where it was initially heading.
