SVA | Interior Design | Studio Apartment
I occasionally take Continuing Education Courses to supplement my skillset and I’ve found that SVA has a decent course offering that fits within a fulltime schedule.
This work is from an Interior Design course that focused on the History of Interiors and Architecture while introducing problem sets for us to solve and receive critique on
For this problem, we needed to remodel an interior studio apartment for a client in NYC. There were limitations on Window and Plumbing Adjustment and we needed to satisfy the clients’ needs.
My client was a woman who worked in theater and lived alone with her dog. She valued her alone time and sometimes worked from home, but also wanted to occasionally host after parties and small get-togethers.
She was cleanly and wanted to color scheme to be bright, playful, and visible to her dog.
Below is a resulting Moodboard:
Here, there’s a balance being struck between a playful but calm use of color and a clean but comfortable use of material. Forms are on trend but simple enough to have longevity.
Below is the edited plan view with the original plan for context. This shows solutions for suiting her needs: a division of her public, work, and private space.
Following are the Elevations of the apartment that I made in illustrator. They show more detail about the use of the space and the balance found through the placement of objects and furniture.
There was an intent to be conscious of the flow of movement within the living space and an ask to use simplistic principals of feng shui to consider the design of the space in terms of energy flow. Below you can see some of those principals that have been studied and integrated that are not rendered in the plan (placement of workspace and seating space in relationship to windows and doors, color of bedrooms and entertaining spaces, the placement of oranges and the use of natural materials for grounding, etc).
A next step would be further color studies, consideration of HVAC, Lighting Plans, and more refined renders. Ultimately, I feel like this is a solid perspective that balances the need for a clean, simple, energized home.
